Biography

Alex W. Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics, and Medical Imaging, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Western Ontario and holds a Canadian Institutes of Health Research University-Industry Chair and is the Director of the Bioelectromagnetics Group within the Imaging Program of the Lawson Health Research Institute.

Alex is a multidisciplinary researcher and professor and received his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics from the University of Western Ontario in 2001 after beginning university as a mature student at age 41. He also holds an M.Sc. degree in Neuroscience from the University of Western Ontario and an Honours B.A. in Psychology from Laurentian University. Upon completion of his Ph.D., he was recruited to Lawson as the first dedicated Lawson BEMs Scientist. New infrastructrue installed at Lawson in 2009 (EEG/MRI/PET hybrid imaging platform, CFI-LEF) and the MF shielded facility will allow further research into understanding magnetic field interactions and mechanisms and explaning other areas of potential clinical application (including affective and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders). Dr. Thomas is a member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Industry Peer-Review Committee, and is an Associate Editor of the journal Pain Research and Management.
